Undoubtedly, the arrival of cellular mobile telephony is one of the most momentous innovations in the history of communications. Since Martin Cooper (father of the cell phone) made the first radio call in 1973, mobile phones have been further revolutionized the way we communicate, bringing the world into the palm of your hand. The phone has enabled millions of low-income people, who had no fixed telephone service, access to modern communications can transmit not only voice but also other content such as music, entertainment, text messaging, etc. .

In Argentina, the provision of mobile communications services began in 1989 when the company Movicom (Bell South) won the license to provide mobile radio service in the City of Buenos Aires, the Suburbs and the Plata. In 1993, the company adds Miniphone (owned by Telecom and Telefónica), which was licensed to provide service only in the AMBA.
Inside the country, divided into north and south, mobile services were provided by the CTI (Interior Telephone Company) since 1995. Also, since 1996, companies Telecom and Telefonica were licensed to provide wireless service in the geographical areas where they offer basic telephone service (fixed), competing with CTI.
At that point, companies were deploying digital technologies that allowed them to sharply increase the number of users in different areas. Moreover, technological change has reduced both the size and weight equipment as well as make them more ergonomic and functional. The introduction of Calling Party Pays or calling party pays (CPP) in 1997, contributed to lower the high initial costs of the service and expand the number of mobile phone users. By 1998 the mobile phone market had more than 2.5 million mobile terminals and a network reaching all towns with more than 500 inhabitants.
Since 1999 operators within the country had access to the AMBA, Miniphone split between its owners, while Movicom-only provider of AMBA-had access to operate inside the country. It set a market in which CTI, Personal (Telecom), Unifón (Telefonica) and Movicom began to operate throughout the country, and users could choose freely among different providers authorized to provide service in each area.
As a result of the crisis, between 2001 and 2002, there was a fall in the number of mobile terminals, but the trend was reversed very rapidly since 2003.
Today in our country, the mobile service is provided by three main companies: Personal (Telecom), Movistar (Telefonica, ex Unifón and Movicom) and Claro (America Movil, ex CTI). The fourth operator is Nextel, which focuses on the corporate market.
